These are monster-sized heavy speakers and unfortunately the flimsy shipping box is hardly strong enough to handle the load. I recommend you check your item as soon as possible for hidden damage. As large as this item is, I consider this item to be delicate. Delicate because I believe that Pyle has cut corners to provide this sized raw frame at such a low price. This includes the spider, the coil and the surround. The T/S data shows this item to be well suited for a vented box at 5.5 cubic feet with an 8 inch duct.
Because of the surround and spider issues I would not use this item for a front loaded horn. Because of the size of this item I would not build a long throat rear horn. A 1/2 wave rear folded horn would be room size.
I've seen plans on the internet for a short rear horn like a scoop or single inner baffle but IMHO this length will not produce the rear loading on the cone needed to provide rear compression. Scoops may look fun but for all that work to build one this size it will not perform any better than a poorly vented box.
I've chosen a computer aided /modifed 1/4 wave transmission line that provides the rear cone compression in the main baffle chamber plus the expansion through the guided maze. Speaker baffle is 3/4 plywood fully braced for flex. The inner baffles are 5/8" ply and supported with both continuous glued cleats and 3/8" threaded rod with nutted fender washers front to back. I use 12gauge speaker wire inside the box from the plug panel to the terminals. Weighing 200 pounds each these cabinets become very heavy boxes with rope handles that two people can barely drag around.
I use a Crown xls802 per each speaker in bridged mono. I consider these true "subs". They do not reproduce sound and I do not ask them to. The speaker only gets the bass drum signal using a Sennheiser e602 mic from the group out of the mixer. It is a stand alone system: Bass drum+mic+preamp(mixer out)+eq to squash anything over 80hz+ dbx compressor to attenuate the sound to just one thump+ Crown amp(s)+ Pyle 21's.
I rate these a 4 because I do believe they are delicate and I have to baby them. If they were better construction like a JBL at 4x the price I'd still baby them but I would not worry about the surround coming off.
