Any engine can benefit from a catch can. Piston engines produce pressure in the crankcase as the pistons pump up and down. If that pressure were to build, it can reduce ring seal and hence the purpose of the ventilation system. Due to emission standards however, that pressure cannot be vented to the atmosphere. The OEMs solution is to route the vapors into the intake manifold so that it can be burned in the combustion chamber. Over time this can cause problems for your engine. The gases from the crankcase carry emulsified oil that coats the intake runners (producing that sludge you see when you remove the manifold on a high-mileage engine) and degrades the octane of the atomized fuel entering the combustion chamber. A vehicle's ECU will protect the engine by reducing timing, but performance suffers adding a tune can aggravate the problem in the sense that you won't be getting the performance that the tune was designed to produce. Looks great under the hood. Only issue I have is that it's not easy to unscrew the bottom in the limited space it has after being mounted. I wish there was a bolt mounted underneath that a socket could fit onto, much like the k&n oil filters. I have to almost completely remove it to unscrew the bottom off each time.
