Kicker ZX4001 400W Monoblock Car Amplifier Review

I bought this amp to replace a Boston Acoustics GT-22 2 channel amp (275 watts). I am running one 10" Boston Acoustics G2 sub in a ported box and the Kicker not only provides more power but also delivers much tighter bass at lower volumes. The difference between the two is immediately noticeable in it's construction/design, it's performance and price.

Construction/Design:
This amp is small for it's power rating and has a small footprint allowing your to easily mount it almost anywhere in your vehicle. I opted to mount mine right to the side of my ported box so it has some room to breath. Everything on it is overbuilt and is pretty rugged so if you put it in your trunk or under a car seat you don't have to worry about it getting banged up. The connectors are gold plated and are nice and thick to allow for larger gauge wires. It is enclosed with 1/4" thick brushed aluminum or magnesium and has heat sinks on the top and bottom to keep it cool. Installation and mounting was easy as all hookups are easily assessable and visible, good in tight places. I know this amp will outlast the others I have tried in my system.

Performance:
It sounds great with a wide variety of music and if tuned properly it will give you tight bass and shouldn't stress the amp or your equipment. It runs very efficiently and after long use is barely warm to the touch. It also consumes little power for the thump it produces, as it is as a class D amp. I own a 2004 Honda Civic (with a modest alternator) and without a capacitor at high volumes it doesn't dim the headlights like previous amps I've owned. It can be tuned to your liking or preference (Gain, Frequency Crossover, and Bass Boost) using the easily assessable knobs located directly on the top of the amp. It also features a high and low pass filter, and an RCA input and output to easily add additional amps in the future without wiring them all the way to the deck. What I like best about this particular amp is that it delivers power at low volume and makes your music sound very full at lower levels. My girl and I recently had our first child so we can't always enjoy our music at high volume. The amp delivers crisp bass at lower levels and balances out our system nicely for our now varying listening preferences. I only am running one 10" sub with it now, but I don't doubt that it could easily power another if I only had the space in the trunk.

My Tuning Settings (for powering a subwoofer):
Gain: At about 50% or a hair higher.
Frequency Crossover: Between 75-85 Hz
Bass Boost: 0 or off

Price:
Amazon (or third party seller) is offering this high end amp for almost half of what Best Buy and other online retailers are asking. You really can't go wrong at this price. Kicker typically rates their amp's output lower than their true overall output, something that almost no manufacturer does. Almost all of the other brands exaggerate their product's output, or rate their amps output at 1 or a 1/2 ohm. So you are actually getting more than what you are paying for. After going through a few different amps over the last few years, from here on out I will confidently stick with Kicker amps.
