Features of the APP18L1-BS12: Equivalent of Lead-Acid 12V, 18Amp battery For 270CCA motorcycles Left polarity Max charge rate: 18Amp Also known as LFX18L1-BS12 What makes Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries different from other batteries? Quality Control: All the primary cell ingredients are sourced from Japan, tested for 6 weeks, and built in an ISO 9000:2008 certified factory. Finally, the battery is encased in a military spec Carbon Composite Case. This allows production of the most consistent and reliable cells. Safety: LiFePO4 batteries are safer for the operator and the environment. No explosive gasses, lead, or acid are released during charge or leak out. Battery has Zero sulfation. Prismatic Cells: Other companies offering Lithium-Iron based powersports batteries use cylindrical cells originally made for power tool applications. These cells come in only one size, offering a less versatile fit. Prismatic cells can be freely designed and sized to fit many applications. Power tool cells were not originally intended for the high current discharges in starter systems. Because they are being used out of original design, they will loose capacity every time they are used this way. Prismatic cells have been designed to be the perfect powersports starter batteries. I just put this battery in my Buell 1125R tonight so I cannot speak to the long or even short term use of this battery. Over time I will know whether moving it up a star or down one or more is appropriate or not. For now though the immediate impression is four stars. To begin with apparently this battery is a Shorai but marketed as a Phantom by some company out of Texas. Whether or not being a Shorai is good or bad I really don't know. Also, whether or not this battery is identical to the Shorai branded battery only with a different label, or made specifically for Phantom by Shorai I really don't know. I tried looking on the net for the answer and couldn't find it. Either way, I'm not completely familiar with either brand so only time will tell if it makes any difference or not. The reason I went with the Phantom over the Shorai is that the Phantom is sold directly by Amazon and the Shorai is sold by another company through Amazon. Being that I have no idea what to expect from a LiFePO battery I decided that with Amazons flawless track record of customer service (for me) I would be more comfortable dealing with them if there is a problem.
When I was on Shorai's web site it stated that their batteries have a 3 year warranty (prorated I believe.) I could not find anything on Amazon's site nor the site for the parent company marketing the Phantom battery as to what the warranty is. Upon opening the box there is a sheet of paper with the instructions and the warranty. It states the warranty period is one year. I do not recall if it is prorated or not. The shorter warranty is the sole reason I knocked a star off. If the battery performs without issue for over 3 years though, this is a non issue. Just because something has a starter warranty that doesn't indicate directly a lack of quality. Look at Honda and Toyota, they have some of the shortest warranty periods out there but have very respectable quality. Time will tell what the case is with these batteries.
The battery itself is just as expected. That is, considerably smaller than the OEM battery and much lighter. Installing the battery was pretty straight forward. It required numerous foam spacers to be cut and stuck to the battery to compensate for the smaller size. It only took a scissors and a few minutes though. Because of the mounting in the Buell I had to add pads to make the battery the same size as the OEM in all dimensions. On some bikes it may be possible to securely mount the battery and free up some space that the old battery occupied. For me this wasn't the case though.
On Shorai's web site it says these batteries are shipped charged and should have enough charge to start your bike. In my case this was the first time this season I started the bike. The bike sat, with no battery for nearly 6 months. With the battery installed I pushed the starter button and the bike did crank. It didn't want to start right away though and took about 30-40 seconds of cranking before I even got a single fire. This isn't necessarily a battery issue but while cranking my instrument cluster kept flashing low battery. Eventually the bike did fire and start. My understanding of these LiFePO batteries is that they give close to 100% voltage until they are nearly dead and then they abruptly stop. The advantage is if your battery is less than 100% it should still crank like it is 100%. This leaves me slightly confused as to why my bike was cranking but the computer was detecting low voltage. Either way, the bike fired and I let it run about 10 minutes. After that I shut the bike off and it sat a few hours before I took it to work.
I'm guessing the battery was pretty minimally charged and that is why the voltage was low. My ride to work is about an hour so the battery should be at or very near 100% and should stay that way through the rest of the riding season. If I experience any problems at all I will update this review. I will also try to remember to update this review at the end of this season and the beginning of the next to see how it hold up during the riding season and then during storage for the winter.
The last thing I will mention is that the box states that the battery is designed in Japan and made in China. They make no mention of this on Amazon or Phantoms parent company web site. Whether or not that makes a difference to you doesn't matter but now at least you know before you buy.
