Ford Triton Plug-Saver Kit Review

The main problem is the instructions do not match the tools:

Step one says "Place the tap in the extension bar provided and tighten the grub screw to secure."
This has been replaced, now the tap is held in the extension bar with just a magnet.

Step two is correct.

Step three says "Wind the insert onto the threaded section of the installation tool provided. Wind the insert in until it is flush with the top of the tapped hole. Unwind the installation tool."
This is hard to do because this tool has been changed. It's now used to thread in the insert AND swage the insert! The tool in Step four has been replaced by a beveled edge at the top of the insert tool which expands the knurled top when you tighten down the insert.

If you're doing this 'blind' (without the head off) you should LIGHTLY wind the insert in to see where the sealant mashes into the threads. Simply place a beaded line vertically along the length of the insert to just below the knurled edge. Then when you wind it in lightly until you feel resistance it will smear the sealant up. Now back it back out and rethread deeper if you need to until when you lightly thread the insert in the sealant spreads to the knurled edge. NOW you tighten down the insert causing the beveled top to expand the knurled edge locking the insert into place. If your tap has not been deep enough you will tighten too high and the knurled edge will be expanded without being in the hole and grip nothing. You will know this as the insert will come back out when you unwind the tool from the tap hole because your insert will still be on the tool. Because of how this works and poor instructions, I wasted three inserts doing it 'blind'. However, once I got it and let it sit with the plug in for 24 hours my wife's Excursion is now running fine.

Step four originally says "Using the other edge of the installation tool place the straight swage section into the insert and hit several times to expand the knurl."

Bottom line: Shop wanted $540.00 for ONE replacement. My cost: $160.00 + 3 hours work plus I have more inserts, the tool and the knowledge to do others if the need arises. This was my first ever. Also, you're going to be removing a LOT of material rethreading the plug hole. I cleaned and regreased my tap at least four times to make sure as much material was caught as possible. Then the hole was shop vac'd after each tap use. Then the insert depth was checked each time until correct.

For the do it your self person. This was a pain to properly bolt to my 2010 Ford Edge frame. Directions made it seem easy. Getting carrier style bolt through rectangler braket, and then from inside of frame coming outward is tricky. Over all it took me 2 and a half hours to do this.
